The total area of the Kherson region is 2846100 hectares. Agricultural manufactures & private owners occupy 2136800 hectares, or 75%. 98% of the regions land is used for agriculture development. Kherson region has the biggest irrigation system in Europe. It is called Kakhovskaya irrigation system & occupies 321500 hectares where the total irrigation area of the region is 471700 hectares.

The region encompasses over 1893 million hectares of rich black soil, of which 93% is arable & 27% irrigated. Such rich soil & the region’s warm climate allow the agricultural sector to be a major contributor to the region’s economy, produsing approximately 30% of its total GNP.
 Grain is the region’s primary agricultural product. Over 53% of the region’s total farmland is used to produce such grains as winter wheat, barley, corn, millet & rice. Second to grain is sunflower and canola seeds production. The region also produces large quantities of tomatoes, grapes, melons & other fruits & vegetables.

Over 264 non-state agricultural enterprises, 37 state-farms, 43 agricultural joint-stock associations, 32 scientific-research farms & institutions, 34 subsidiary agricultural enterprises, 3188 private farm households are located in the region. Included in these farms are 18 specialized beef producting farms, 30 pig breeding farms, 43 sheep breeding farms, 11 egg farms, 10 poultry farms. An average size of africultural enterprise is 4.4 thousand hektares & agricultural farm – 34 hektares.

Private sector produces 21% of grain, 52% of milk, 63% of meat of the region’s production volume.
Kherson region has 216.2 thousand hektares of land reserve, including 203.4 thousand hektares of farmland where 170,2 thousand hektares are arable.

In a couple years about 165 thousand farmers became private land owners & now they form a very active part of the private sector development.
